90 year old Lionel awarded for outstanding contribution to boxing
90 year old Lionel Hutchings from Teignbridge has been honoured for his lifetime commitment to boxing.
The award, organised by Kings Boxing Academy in Kingsteignton and donated by Linden Homes, recognises outstanding individuals who make a positive contribution to society.

Lionel started boxing at the age of 13 and had 297 bouts over 16 years, as well as 50 army contests, before turning to coaching where he dedicated his free time to support young people. He volunteered for 47 years as a coach at Exeter Amateur Boxing Club before hanging up his gloves.

Kalem Nuttall, secretary of Kings Boxing Academy, commented: “We are delighted that Lionel has been recognised for his incredible contribution to the local boxing community. He continues to support the sport as a patron of Kings and is always enthusiastic about the boxers and their progress.

“The awards presentation was a great success and it was wonderful to honour a local sports hero who has inspired so many.”
A special event was held to recognise Lionel, who also received a boxing medal from England Boxing head office. The presentation was hosted at the boxing gym and the team invited several key community figures to celebrate the occasion, including Devon County councillor and mayor Ron Peart, and the mayoress. There was also Glenn Catley, the former super middle-weight British and WBC world champion – who is also a patron of the club.

Emma Smith, sales and marketing director for Linden Homes, commented: “We’re proud to help the club and local community recognise Lionel’s outstanding commitment by donating a special boxing championship belt
“There are certain individuals in our community that go above and beyond to inspire others and Lionel has dedicated his life to the sport. It’s fantastic to see him receive the gratitude he rightly deserves.”
