Leading housebuilder Linden Homes West Midlands recently invited The Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor John Lines, and city councillors Vivienne Barton and Bruce Lines to unveil a new road name at its Bartley Green-based development, The Mews.
Jane Bunford, born in Bartley Green, in 1895, was twice named as the tallest woman in the world, and to pay tribute to her achievements, children from Bartley Green School have named a road after her. To celebrate the opening of Bunford Close, Linden Homes invited residents of The Mews and those pupils involved in the naming to welcome the Lord Mayor to the development.
The pupils chose Jane Bunford after learning about her life in history classes. At the launch, they explained how they were so inspired by her achievements that they felt that the road name would be a fitting tribute to her life spent in the local area. Bunford grew up in Bartley Green and was known all over the UK for her world records, but died in 1922 from her growth condition, at just 26 years old.
The Lord Mayor said: “Congratulations to the children for choosing Jane Bunford as the inspiration for the road name. This is a fitting tribute to her, and it is something which will help other generations to remember her triumphs. It gives me pleasure to unveil the road name here at The Mews.”
Linda Huntington, sales manager for Linden Homes West Midlands, said: “Linden Homes is proud to be part of the road-naming. It is a perfect link to Jane Bunford’s old community here. Her life plays a big role in the history of Bartley Green, and this road name helps to continue her legacy.”
The Mews is a select courtyard, with only two four-bedroom homes remaining. Ideally located in the heart of southwest Birmingham, the development is tucked away in a rural setting, with a range of shops, supermarkets and other amenities all close by. However, you can also enjoy the sights and sounds of Birmingham, as the city centre is just seven miles* away.
