Jake Robson is looking at a bright future after snapping up a trainee quantity surveyor’s post with a leading construction company.
The 20-year-old, from Dunston, has started work with Galliford Try as the business expands its workforce following a number of contract wins in the North East.
Jake originally studied IT, business and product design at sixth form college but like so many young people at present, found securing full time work a challenge on leaving education. He worked is a sports good shop and in a bar for a while but it was while labouring for a small building company that he developed an interest in the construction industry.
“It just felt right,” he said: “It was hard work but really interesting and to see something being created from nothing gives me a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. I started looking for opportunities and saw the Galliford Try job advertised, so I immediately applied and was delighted to get it.”
After an initial probationary period Jake hopes to begin his training proper with a college course, splitting his time between the lecture theatre, library and building sites.

Winning a string of new projects – including building new homes as part of the Gateshead BIG initiative, three sites for Northumberland County Council in Blyth, the Lynwood Extra Care facility for Derwentside Homes and doctors’ surgery for the local Primary Care Trust, as well as homes for livin in Newton Aycliffe means Galliford Try is working across the North East.
