Work on a monumental stairway linking the slope between Truro’s Piazza at the base dominated by Royal Barham House, on Infirmary Hill, is soon to be underway, offering residents and visitors panoramic views of the city, as part of a new public garden.
Sixty natural granite steps, will connect the originally isolated plot, when in use as an infirmary for the poor, dating back to the end of the 18th century. Although the grounds of Royal Barham House have until now have been used informally as a picnic spot for the public, the steps will, for the first time, connect the historic building with the town it was originally intended to serve.
The steps will be central to lawn areas, yew trees and hedges to complement the existing mature species on Infirmary Hill.
The south side of the gardens will benefit from facing the sun and the warm colour of the bath stone on Royal Barham House, will radiate heat and warmth providing a climate ideal for a stunning display, with exotic planting and species more related to the stately gardens of Cornwall.
Developers, Linden Homes have worked closely with Truro City Council to provide a formal public garden, with yew trees and lawns, to complement the existing mature species on infirmary hill.
Linden South West Sales Director, Brian Deacon said “Royal Barham House has remained an isolated plot that has, in its long history, seen the city of Truro built around it. We have taken great care to bring to life this uniquely positioned conservation area that will benefit of the whole of Truro.”
The project is part of the regeneration of Royal Barham House which is due to offer new apartments within the sympathetically restored historical building. For more information call 0844 417 3171 to book a personal appointment.
