Playing The Sporting Generation Game
27 Oct 2016

A Yorkshire housebuilder is bridging the sporting generation gap with sponsorship for teams at either end of the age spectrum.

The company provided a set of umbrellas to the Robin Hood Golf Society – average age 53 - and a new kit for the Brunsmeer Athletic AFC under eight football team.

Both are based close to the Hall Farm Court development at Worrall, just outside Sheffield. Emma Butcher, Sales Manager with Linden Homes West Yorkshire region, said: “ We are always keen to support community activities in the areas where we build and were happy to respond to requests for sponsorship from both of these clubs.

“We wish the more senior golfers and the aspiring young footballers every success in their respective competitions.”

The Robin Hood Golf Society has 30 members and started from regulars in the tap room of the Robin Hood pub at Loxley in 2004. Although the pub closed, the name remained because the majority of the members live locally.

Said club member John Jubb: “We play nine games each year at various courses within an hour’s drive of Sheffield and have a special weekend away and have played at the Belfry and other top courses, which reflects how our society has grown, plus the quality of golf.

“We are very grateful for the umbrellas, which will come in handy for British summer weather and also add a professional, more uniformed look when we take to the course.”

Although Brunsmeer Athletic AFC is in its 50th year, the under eight side has only been playing for two. It is progressing well in the Sheffield and District Junior Sunday League and has just won the October Challenge Cup.

The club’s Lee Whitehead, said: “The team relies heavily on funds we can raise and that requires a real effort from our players’ parents. I approached Linden Homes after buying a new house at Hall Farm Court and Emma kindly agreed to provide a new home strip, which we really appreciate.

It was a massive boost as without it parents would once again have been funding their child’s kit, adding to the already expensive cost of buying boots, shin pads and the subscription fees. It is fantastic that a company like Linden Homes cares about the local community and supports grass roots football.”
