See the homesThis well-located county boasts stunning scenery, some historic towns and excellent transport links throughout. Located just to the north of Birmingham and encompassing parts of the stunning Peak District National Park, Staffordshire is a fine part of England to call home.
The M6 motorway and a network of A roads connect Staffordshire with Birmingham to the south, Derby, Leicester and Derby to the east, the rural West of England and Wales to the west and the vibrant cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield to the north.
Staffordshire itself is certainly not lacking in attractions or inspiration. Stafford, the county town, dates back to 700AD and is home to the magnificent Stafford Castle, built originally by the Normans around 1090. One of the finest examples of Norman earthworks in the country, today the site extends to over 26 acres and also incorporates a woodland area, herb garden and visitor centre. The landmark is also the backdrop to the annual Stafford Festival Shakespeare, held in June and July and now regarded as one of the best open air celebrations of the Bard’s work in the country. Indeed, culture and the arts are well-represented in Stafford and the surrounding area, with the annual Staffs Fest music event also drawing the crowds. There is an art gallery and theatre to enjoy in the town centre, while there are plenty of shops and green spaces to enjoy too.
On the subject of green spaces, the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a stunning part of the county to visit and enjoy. The largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands, it has extensive areas of woodland and forest, with the wild deer that roam the landscape thought to descend from the original herd introduced in Norman times for hunting purposes. Cannock Chase is also home to Shugborough Hall, a rare example of a complete estate believed to date back to 1695. This fascinating National Trust-owned property is open to the public and includes the original mansion house, servants’ quarters, historic farmyard and walled garden.
The north-eastern part of the county also includes a section of the beautiful Peak District National Park, with its stunning landscapes, market towns and villages, breath-taking views and many famous attractions and traditional events.
The M6 motorway runs through the county and is accessible via the M40 or M1 motorways for those travelling from the south. From the north, the M6 also links with the M62, which connects Manchester and Liverpool. The M54 motorway also runs into Staffordshire from Telford, Shropshire to the west, while the M42 also links with the M6 from the east.
Those looking to travel by rail can take advantage of services running into Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford from London Euston, Bristol Temple Meads and Manchester Piccadilly, while routes also operate between Stafford and Birmingham New Street, as well as Liverpool Lime Street.
For air travel, Birmingham Airport is within an hour’s drive of home, and offers flights across Europe and around the world.
